Breast Cancer Symptoms: what to look out for and how to check yourself?

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, yet early detection can increase survival rates to over 90%. Understanding the warning signs and performing regular self-examinations can make a significant difference—but these should never replace mammograms and professional screenings.

At Radhiant Diagnostic Imaging, we are committed to early detection, ensuring women have access to state-of-the-art equipment and a highly qualified team that makes screening as comfortable and accessible as possible.

Common Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Not all breast cancer symptoms are the same, and some may not be visible at all. However, here are key warning signs to be aware of:

  • Lumps or thickened tissue in the breast or underarm
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Nipple discharge, especially if bloody or occurring without pressure
  • Inverted or retracted nipples (pulling inward instead of pointing out)
  • Persistent pain in the breast or nipple
  • Redness, swelling, or warmth that does not subside

While these signs do not always indicate cancer, any changes should be assessed by a doctor.

How to Perform a Breast Self-Exam (BSE)

A Breast Self-Exam (BSE) helps you become familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts, making it easier to detect changes early.

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Look
Stand in front of a mirror with your arms at your sides. Check for any changes in shape, size, skin texture, or nipple appearance. Repeat the check with your arms raised.

Step 2: Feel While Standing
Use the pads of your fingers to examine your breast in circular motions. Start from the outer edge and move towards the nipple, covering the entire breast and underarm area.

Step 3: Feel While Lying Down
Lie flat on your back with one arm raised above your head. Use your opposite hand to check your breast using the same circular motion.

Important Reminder:
While BSEs are helpful, they do not replace regular mammograms. Many early-stage breast cancers cannot be felt, which is why mammograms remain the gold standard for early detection.

When to See a Doctor

If you notice any unusual changes in your breasts, do not panic—but do not ignore them either. See a doctor if you experience:

✔ A lump that does not disappear after your menstrual cycle
✔ Persistent pain in one area of your breast
✔ Swelling, redness, or warmth that lingers
✔ Nipple discharge, especially if bloody

Early detection saves lives—the sooner a concern is checked, the better the chances of successful treatment.

The Importance of Regular Mammograms Breast cancer can develop long before symptoms appear, which is why regular mammograms are essential.

  • Early detection improves survival rates to over 90%
  • Mammograms can identify tumours before they can be felt
  • Many medical aids cover preventive screenings

At Radhiant Diagnostic Imaging, we make mammograms accessible, comfortable, and professional. Our state-of-the-art mobile mammogram unit allows us to bring life-saving screenings directly to women across South Africa, removing barriers such as travel, cost, and time.

Common Myths About Breast Cancer Symptoms

There are common myths about breast cancer and breast cancer screenings that can deter women from scheduling a regular mammogram. Knowing what is fact vs myth could save your life.

  • Myth: “If I don’t have a family history, I’m safe.”
  • Fact: 70% of breast cancer cases occur in women with no family history.
  • Myth: “A lump is the only sign of breast cancer.”
  • Fact: Many symptoms—including skin changes, pain, or nipple discharge can indicate cancer.
  • Myth: “Mammograms expose me to dangerous radiation.”
  • Fact: The radiation exposure from mammograms is minimal, and the benefits of early detection far outweigh any risks.
